Popular Filipino bakery to open two new Bay Area locations

Daly City institution Ling Nam, which has been serving Filipino-Chinese comfort food at its restaurant and bakeries since the 1990s, is expanding with new bakeries in South San Francisco and Union City.

Still under construction, the new South San Francisco bakery, at 231 Grand Ave., is opening near the family’s original restaurant, a no-frills 24/7 establishment known for beef mami, silog, siopao, siomai and other traditional recipes inspired by Manila’s Chinatown. The restaurant moved to a new location in Daly City in 2021, adding a takeout bakery Starbread to the Ling Nam brand.

The Union City location, at 1760 Decoto Road, near the BART station, will mark a shift from Ling Nam’s takeout bakeries. It will have seating for 15 and customer-facing ovens turning out the sweet, buttery señorita bread rolls and wafting scents onto the street.
