I stared down $53-per-pound salmon — then called a fisherman

Last week at one of my favorite butcher shops, Barons Quality Meats & Seafood (opens in new tab) in Noe Valley, I came across something that took my breath away. At this point, I’m nearly immune to the shocking cost of beef. But local king salmon filets were priced at $52.99 a pound.

At first, I went went full Mr. Krabs, my eyes zoinking out. Then I exhaled a few Andrew Huberman “physiological sighs” (opens in new tab) and did what all righteous food-loving Bay Area residents do: tried to rationalize it.

After all, this summer is the first time in three years that commercial fishing of local salmon has been allowed, so why not celebrate? Even if it’s with only a single slice of sashimi…
