Bay Area treated to another stunning sunset

Update, 9:00 p.m.: In a last-minute surprise, the thicker cloud deck shifted east of San Francisco before sunset, allowing much of the Bay Area to enjoy another spectacular evening display. Sunday’s sunset looked different from Saturday’s but was just as striking. Increased moisture aloft produced multiple cloud layers at different heights in the atmosphere, each catching the fading sunlight to create bands of pink and lavender across the sky.

Saturday night’s sky took its time. Then, several minutes after sunset, clouds over parts of the Bay Area burst into pinks, oranges and purples.

S.F. Chronicle photographer Stephen Lam, positioned near Mount Tamalpais, nearly packed up after the sun slipped beneath the fog and the scene faded into blue-gray light. But he decided to stick around, and the color finally arrived around 8:35 p.m.

That delayed show offers an instructive lesson for Sunday evening: Don’t leave when the sun disappears…
