Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers may be using the Eastmont Mall parking lot in Oakland to transfer detainees, according to immigrant rights advocates.
The Alameda County Immigration Legal and Education Partnership, or ACILEP, said in an Instagram post on July 30 that a person detained by ICE in June reported being taken to the Eastmont Mall’s Parking Lot C before they were transported to the agency’s processing center in San Francisco. Lot C is on the lower level of the mall’s parking structure, in front of the Center for Elders’ Independence on Bancroft Avenue.
Immigrant advocates have warned that enforcement at and near sensitive locations, like healthcare facilities, courthouses, social work agencies, and schools, could harm people by scaring them away from critical services and worsen public safety…
