A 45-year-old man was shot and killed in East Oakland yesterday afternoon, becoming the 33rd homicide investigated by Oakland police so far this year. The man was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in the 800 block of 75th Avenue around 3:30 p.m. and was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Oakland police have not released the victim’s name or his place of residence, according to The Mercury News. Investigators also have not said whether the man was shot from a passing vehicle or by someone who confronted him on the street, and a motive for the killing remains under investigation.
The shooting adds to a homicide count that, while still rising through the summer, remains below last year’s pace. Oakland police had investigated 42 homicides by the same point in 2025, compared with 33 so far this year, per the same account. It is the latest in a string of East Oakland shootings Hoodline has tracked this year, including a fatal shooting on Tesla Drive in June that marked the city’s 24th homicide of the year.
A City Trending Toward Fewer Killings, But Not Without Setbacks
The East Oakland shooting arrives against a backdrop of significant citywide progress on homicides. Oakland recorded 67 homicides in 2025 — its lowest total in 25 years, a 22% drop from the 86 homicides logged in 2024 and half of the post-pandemic peak of 134 in 2021, according to The Guardian.
