SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Smoke seen coming from under a manhole cover near the Salesforce Tower in San Francisco Thursday morning was determined to be due to heated electrical lines within an underground vault, according to fire officials. The response has temporarily shut down area streets and is expected to cause traffic impacts downtown amid the morning commute.
The San Francisco Fire Department responded at 4:44 a.m. to the intersection of First and Mission streets for the reported smoke. “The incident was isolated to the vault and was quickly mitigated by PG&E and SFFD, minimizing impacts to the surrounding area,” SFFD wrote.
As of 7:12 a.m., fire officials said the incident was in “the recovery phase.”
“The intersection of First and Mission will remain closed for an additional hour, with a projected reopening around 8 to 9 AM this morning,” SFFD wrote. “This will impact traffic entering the freeway, as well as Embarcadero and surrounding areas.”…
