A 37-year-old San Francisco man was shot and killed in a parking lot in the 3200 block of Grand Avenue early Sunday, in the heart of Oakland’s Grand Lake District. The shooting happened around 1:56 a.m., and the victim was found with at least one gunshot wound before he was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His name has not been released pending notification of family.
According to The Mercury News, the killing is the 39th homicide investigated by the Oakland Police Department this year. Investigators are still trying to confirm why the victim was in Oakland and what led to the shooting, and they have not ruled out the possibility that he was involved in a dispute before being shot. The Grand Lake District sits at the northeast corner of Lake Merritt, bordered by Adams Point, Trestle Glen, and Piedmont, and its commercial spine along Grand and Lakeshore avenues is anchored by the historic Grand Lake Theatre, per Wikipedia. A Homicide Pace Still Below Last Year’s
Sunday’s killing marks the 39th homicide Oakland police have investigated so far in 2026, compared with 50 homicides the department had logged at the same point in 2025, per the same account from the Mercury News. That gap tracks with a broader decline the city has seen in recent years. Oakland closed out 2025 with 67 total homicides, a 22% drop from 86 in 2024 and the city’s lowest annual total in 25 years, according to The Oaklandside.
