Bay Area’s mysterious marmots released back into wild

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Two mountain-dwelling marmots who mysteriously appeared in the cities of San Francisco and Antioch earlier this month are now back in the wilderness near Lake Tahoe.

The marmots spent 18 days rehabilitating at Yggdrasil Urban Wildlife Rescue before they were ready to return to their natural alpine habitat. YUWR’s team released the marmots Tuesday about 7,802 feet up in the Sierra Nevada mountains.

The first marmot was found and rescued in the Mission District of San Francisco on Sept. 4.

“Unbelievably, a second yellow-bellied marmot was spotted loitering at a job site in Antioch,” the rescue group wrote. After spending a few days on the run, the Antioch marmot was safely captured by volunteers…
