The only place to buy bulk ice between San Francisco and Fort Bragg is about to get a long-overdue overhaul. Sonoma County officials announced plans to replace the aging, failure-prone ice-making equipment at Bodega Bay’s Spud Point Marina with a $2.8 million investment aimed at keeping roughly 250 commercial fishing boats, charter operators and recreational anglers supplied with reliable ice.
The facility’s equipment has exceeded its projected lifespan and has suffered frequent breakdowns that forced the county to truck in ice from outside the region, according to county officials cited by The Press Democrat. The project is expected to include modern, energy-efficient refrigeration equipment.
For Richard Ogg, a commercial fisherman and member of the Spud Point Marina Advisory Committee who has lived in the area for 65 years, the upgrade addresses a problem that has quietly worried the fleet for seasons. Fishers have feared the ice house could fail exactly when they need large volumes of ice most — during salmon or crab runs — since anglers depend on access to ice to preserve their catch, Ogg said, per the same Press Democrat report. “It’s kind of a big deal” to see equipment improvement at the location, he said, calling the project “a win for everybody.”
New Refrigerant Rules Force the County’s Hand
The replacement isn’t just about reliability — it’s also a response to tightening state regulation. The new system will not use R-22, an ozone-depleting refrigerant being phased out under federal law, the newspaper’s report notes. California Senate Bill 1206 compounds that pressure statewide, establishing a phased ban on high-global-warming-potential HFC refrigerants and prohibiting sales of newly produced bulk HFCs with a GWP over 2,200 starting in 2025 to meet climate mandates under SB 1383, according to the North American Sustainable Refrigeration Council…
