All new cars sold in California would be required to have an ‘intelligent speed limiter system’
Unlike Tom Cruise in Top Gun, one lawmaker doesn’t have a need for speed.
A California state senator wants all new cars to have speed-limiting technology that would prevent a driver from going more than 10 miles per hour over the posted speed limit .
San Francisco lawmaker Scott Wiener is behind the proposal .
Senate Bill 961 would require all new cars sold in California starting in 2027 to have an “intelligent speed limiter system” that would GPS to track where the vehicle is driving and match it to the speed limit for that road.
The device would then send a signal to the car’s computer that would limit the speed the vehicle could reach.
He claims it is a safety issue .
“The alarming surge in road deaths is unbearable and demands an urgent response,” said Wiener in a release .
“There is no reason for anyone to be going over 100 miles per hour on a public road, yet in 2020, California Highway Patrol issued over 3,000 tickets for just that offense.”
