First In-N-Out Burger, now Denny’s will close diner in a California city due to out-of-control crime

Citing growing concerns over crime, Denny’s Diner located at 601 Hegenberger Road in Oakland closed its doors permanently today, becoming the latest casualty in the recent string of restaurant closures in the city.

Nearby In-N-Out Burger recently announced it would close its Oakport restaurant in March.

A letter posted on the restaurant’s door explained the decision, expressing gratitude to the Oakland community for 54 years of patronage.

The letter read, “Closing a restaurant location is never an easy decision or one taken lightly. However, the safety and well-being of Denny’s team members and valued guests are our top priority. Weighing those factors, the decision has been made to close this location.”

The closure is a response to the rising crime concerns in the vicinity, contributing to the difficult decision faced by the management. Denny’s extended heartfelt thanks to its team members and the local community, acknowledging the long-standing support for the brand.

Team members who can relocate will be offered positions at other Denny’s locations, where available. The letter concluded with an optimistic note, inviting patrons to visit other Denny’s establishments in the Bay Area, including those at 1776 Powell St. in Emeryville and 25010 Hesperian Blvd. in Hayward.
