The San Francisco Bay Area and Central Coast are currently grappling with a powerful storm system, bringing with it unprecedented wind gusts and substantial rainfall. The National Weather Service reports that winds have reached astonishing speeds, with gusts ranging from 70-90 mph in many peaks across the entire region, including the San Francisco Bay Area and Central Coast. The Big Sur Coast has also experienced similar gusts, while the North Bay has seen wind speeds of 50-70 mph in higher elevations and 40-60 mph in lower elevations.
“The top wind gust was from a mesonet site in Marin with the gust 102 mph, which is plausible since a nearby site was 99 mph,” the weather service wrote.
In addition to the formidable winds, the storm has delivered substantial rainfall, with some areas experiencing significant accumulations. The Santa Cruz Mountains and Santa Lucia Range have received up to 5.00 inches of rain, while the North Bay Mountains have recorded 2.50-3.50 inches. In the lower elevations, including rain shadowed valleys, rainfall totals range from 0.50-2.50 inches.
