Governor Gavin Newsom, alongside a dedicated team of Caltrans crews, participated in a hands-on cleanup initiative near the 880 freeway, specifically targeting the 66th Avenue onramp in Oakland. The collaborative effort involved not only state representatives but also key figures from the local government, including Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao, Assemblymembers Mia Bonta and Buffy Wicks, and Senator Nancy Skinner.
Governor Newsom emphasized the significance of the initiative, stating, “This isn’t just about policing our way to a better future. It’s about providing a full range of support and resources – including what we are doing here today by cleaning up trash.”
The cleanup operation is part of the broader initiative known as Clean California, spearheaded by Caltrans. This multiyear effort aims to eliminate trash, rejuvenate public spaces, and generate employment opportunities. In the case of Oakland, the city has received substantial support, with over $20.6 million allocated from the state to enhance the cleanliness and aesthetics of public areas.
