23 arrests made after cops attempt to shut down one of California’s largest open-air drug markets

In an intensified effort to combat the ongoing drug crisis in the mid-Market area, the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) conducted two nighttime operations around UN Plaza, resulting in the arrest of 23 individuals, as announced by Chief Bill Scott on Monday.

“Open-air drug markets will not be tolerated in San Francisco,” emphasized Chief Bill Scott. The operations, carried out on Wednesday and Friday nights, reflect the latest phase of the city’s Drug Market Agency Coordination Center (DMACC) efforts in the Tenderloin and South of Market neighborhoods.

The SFPD has strategically redirected resources to address challenges at night around UN Plaza after making progress in other areas like 7th and Market streets. These recent operations are part of a sustained initiative and will continue on a consistent basis.

Public Works and the Department of Public Health joined SFPD officers during the night operations to address illegal vending in the area. Public Works crews issued seven notices of violation, impounded seven sets of goods, removed 11 sets of abandoned items from the public right of way, and issued 287 verbal warnings.
