A HERO cop who spent more than 20 years patrolling the Golden Gate Bridge helped to bring more than 200 would-be jumpers back from the brink, earning him the moniker, The Guardian of the Golden Gate.
Kevin Briggs, a former San Quentin prison guard and army veteran, joined the California Highway Patrol in the early 1990s out of San Francisco .
Kevin grew up in the Bay Area and was all too familiar with the Golden Gate Bridge , so he thought he knew what was in store for him when he was assigned to the iconic structure to monitor and respond to traffic-related incidents.
However, one thing Kevin wasn’t aware of was just how pervasive the issue of suicides on the bridge was.
At the time, the Golden Gate Bridge averaged anywhere from four to six instances of someone contemplating or attempting suicide per month – but Kevin said he was never warned by his superiors, nor given any training for how to respond when such a crisis emerged.
