After ignoring public’s opposition, commission forces through $11.50 California bridge toll hike

Bay Area drivers are bracing for a series of toll hikes on seven state-owned bridges, with the first increase set for Jan. 1, 2025. Starting then, the current $7 toll will rise to $8.

The Bay Area Toll Authority (BATA) approved additional increases through 2030, with tolls for two-axle vehicles climbing to $10.50 by the decade’s end. FasTrak users will face annual hikes, reaching $9 in 2027. Drivers using license plate accounts or invoiced tolling will pay added fees starting in 2027.

Officials say the hikes will fund the $2 billion Toll Bridge Capital Improvement Plan, which includes critical repairs and upgrades. Critics, however, are demanding more transparency, arguing the hikes are excessive and premature.
