London Breed, ‘crisis mayor,’ says she ‘wasn’t afraid to take risks’

She didn’t know it yet, but San Francisco Mayor London Breed’s days in office were numbered when she visited Sunnydale in October to celebrate the opening of a new community center, replete with a Boys and Girls Club, community kitchen and even a recording studio.

After more than six years in the office, Breed is now stepping aside after losing her reelection attempt to Mayor-elect Daniel Lurie . She said she’s reminded of her very first budget announcement, which was also made from Sunnydale.

Now, the neighborhood is poised to see 1,700 new units of affordable housing, which Breed told The Examiner in a December interview will allow people who grew up in Sunnydale to stay there.

Her focus on Sunnydale is emblematic of the representation Breed, as she prepares to depart, said she believes she offered corners of San Francisco that have historically been without it.

“Elected officials don’t seem to be interested in taking the kind of risk you would have to take as a mayor to choose communities that may not be as vocal, or may not have the biggest voter turnout,” Breed said. “That’s not where people tend to spend their time or take their political risk on.”
