These new state laws are coming to SF classrooms

California public-school policies around students’ gender identities are in line with San Francisco’s now that a handful of new education laws have taken effect statewide.

Among the changes, The City’s public schools must also notify parents of forthcoming active-shooter drills no later than a week before it happens and right after one occurs. San Francisco Unified School District students will also eventually learn about the treatment of Native Americans during the Spanish colonization of California and the gold rush, as well as how excessive alcohol consumption can lead to depression and anxiety.

Here’s a breakdown of four new laws that took effect Wednesday with the start of the New Year.

State’s gender-identity disclosure rules match SF

California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed into law Assembly Bill 1955 last summer. Beginning Jan. 1, public-school districts and school boards are barred from sharing a student’s sexual orientation , gender identity, or gender expression without their consent. Public-school policies across California must now align with the state law that just took effect.
