More Pain for Commuters as Bridge Tolls Spike in Bay Area; Here Are the Details

Commuters across the Bay Area will now face higher bridge tolls, as of an increase that happned on January 1. The toll increase, the last of three voter-approved hikes under Regional Measure 3, will raise regular tolls for two-axle vehicles from $7 to $8 on seven state-owned bridges.

The affected bridges include:

  • San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge
  • Antioch Bridge
  • Benicia-Martinez Bridge
  • Carquinez Bridge
  • Dumbarton Bridge
  • Richmond-San Rafael Bridge
  • San Mateo-Hayward Bridge

This is the third $1 increase approved by the California Legislature through Senate Bill 595 in 2017 and ratified by voters in 2018. Previous increases took effect in 2019 and 2022.

Toll Rates for Multi-Axle Vehicles

Tolls for vehicles with three or more axles will also rise, with rates increasing as follows:

  • $18 for three axles
  • $23 for four axles
  • $28 for five axles
  • $33 for six axles
  • $38 for seven or more axles

Discounts for Eligible Drivers

Motorcycles, carpools, and clean-air vehicles using FasTrakĀ® will still receive discounted rates during peak hours (5 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays). The discounted toll for these groups will increase from $3.50 to $4. FasTrakĀ® users crossing more than one toll bridge during peak hours may also qualify for a 50-cent discount on the second crossing, with additional discounts available for carpoolers, motorcyclists, and clean-air vehicles.
