Oakland sergeant placed on leave after shooting at suspect in pursuit

( KRON ) – An Oakland sergeant was placed on administrative after shooting a suspect in a police pursuit on Saturday, according to the Oakland Police Department.

An Oakland sergeant said they saw an individual firing a rifle in the 6600 block of MacArthur Boulevard around 5 a.m. OPD said the officer subsequently engaged in a brief foot pursuit with the armed individual. According to police, the sergeant discharged their firearm.

Police said the suspect fled the area into a nearby residence where they barricaded themselves inside. Meanwhile, additional OPD officers responded to the scene.

The suspect surrendered and was taken into custody. Police did not give an exact time, but called the standoff “lengthy.”

The firearm was recovered at the scene, according to OPD.

Paramedics responded to assist the suspect and the sergeant. The suspect was taken to a local hospital and is listed in stable condition.

According to OPD, the department is adhering to its policy and the sergeant involved has been placed on paid administrative leave.
