Oakland homicide victim identified as father of two

(KRON) — A baby and toddler are left without a father after a deadly shooting happened in West Oakland on the last day of 2024, the victim’s family said.

Willie “Mistah Man” Bernstine, 32, was shot to death when he arrived for work on 14th Street at 7:15 a.m. on December 31.

Bernstine leaves behind a grief-stricken wife, as well as their baby and toddler. The victim’s mother, Leah Freeman, said he was a hardworking and loving father who supported his family. “He loved dogs, horses, traveling, music, and motorcycles. All of that came to an abrupt end,” she wrote on a GoFundMe page .

The Oakland Police Department launched an investigation but no arrests have been made. Freeman said she can’t understand why anyone would want to kill her son. “That’s a choice,” she said.
