In one Contra Costa County city, commuting takes longer than anywhere else in the country. According to 2023 U.S. census data , workers there spend an average of 46 minutes traveling one way, nearly 40% of residents endure an hour or more on the road, and more than 20% leave before sunrise. That city? Brentwood.
It’s not alone in the struggle. NBC Bay Area (KNTV-TV) reports that nearby Pittsburg and Antioch also have grueling commutes, averaging 41 and 40 minutes, far exceeding California’s statewide average of 29 minutes.
