Trio of new ‘secret’ stairs pop up in East Oakland

Three years after the City Council approved their funding, a group of newly built pedestrian stairs is nearly ready for use in East Oakland.

The stairs projects in the Cleveland Heights, Highland, and Lower Dimond districts replace old and somewhat dangerous pathways in pedestrian-friendly neighborhoods and create shortcuts to key local amenities.

For example, the new stairs at East 20th St. and 5th Avenue allow hillside residents to cut through the large block of residences to more easily reach the bus stop and the park on flat and walkable Park Boulevard. Several restaurants and other favorites are also immediately near the stairways. The cozy Parkway Cascade mini park is also more accessible now that you don’t have to worry about rolling down the dirt hill to get an open sitting spot…
