SAN FRANCISCO ( KRON ) — Numerous employees with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Region 9 Office in San Francisco arrived at work on April Fool’s Day to find that they were no longer employed.

The layoffs came as part of the Trump Administration’s decision to close the office, which employed 318 people. Former federal worker Julie Fong, who worked of the the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for 25 years, told KRON 4 reporter Will Tran that she received a layoff notice by email when she arrived at the office Tuesday morning.

“We all received impersonal emails on April Fool’s Day and it was not an April Fool’s joke,” Fong said. “… It feels intentionally cruel and malicious, to be honest. Which is in line with some of the other things we’ve experienced recently.”
