City rescinds $500,000 in S.F. Dream Keeper funding from African-American Shakes

The city of San Francisco has pulled $500,000 of Dream Keeper Initiative funding previously awarded to African-American Shakespeare Company with “no explanation,” according to its founder.

Executive Director Sherri Young, who started the theater company in 1994 to provide actors of color more opportunities to perform in the classics, sent a mass email to community members on Tuesday, April 1, with an “urgent appeal.”

“We very much need your support at this extremely difficult time. We’ve been notified that the $500,000 we were awarded earlier this fiscal year from the city has been rescinded with no explanation. This unprecedented act threatens our ability to continue to bring inclusive, thought-provoking shows and programs to the community,” the letter read…
