Are you really from San Francisco if you didn’t go to school here?

Let me just get this out of the way: I did not go to high school in San Francisco. I, like the current mayor , was born at the San Francisco Children’s Hospital. Then I, like the former mayor and current governor , went to public school in Marin County. This would not merit interest in most of the country but, in our City, it’s part of what in some corners defines being from San Francisco.

At least, that’s what they say.

There exists something of a secret handshake among multi-generational San Franciscans: asking the question, “Where did you go to school?” I fail the test every time, though not as badly as those who answer the question with which college they attended…
