Real ID Update: California DMV Extends May Office Hours

The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in California is extending its opening hours ahead of the national deadline for REAL ID enforcement.

Why It Matters

Starting May 7, Americans and permanent residents will only be able to pass through airport security or enter a federal government building if they have a REAL ID.

What To Know

The REAL ID is an upgraded form of identification issued by state driver’s license agencies. To get one, applicants must present a valid ID along with proof of identity—such as a passport or certified birth certificate—proof of their Social Security number and date of birth, and two documents verifying state residency, like a utility bill, credit card statement, or rental agreement.

From May 7, these cards will be required by all travelers aged 18 and older to go through airport security – even on domestic flights – or to enter federal facilities or nuclear power plants. If you do not have REAL ID in time, you can use your passport.

The California DMV has announced it is extending its office hours on Saturday, May 3 – five days before the deadline – to help more people get compliant ID in time…
