Day 45 of the 16th St. Crackdown: Scrubbed streets, frayed nerves

At 10:06 a.m., a police cruiser was parked with its bumper positioned into the driveway of Mission National Bank. A Gubbio Project employee, who starts his shift at 6 a.m. each day, said the cruiser had been there since morning. A minute later, a man on the third floor of the Kailash Hotel on Julian Street shouted from a window: “No fucking pictures, man! Fuck you think it is—no pictures! I’m talking to you!”

At 10:03 a.m., Caledonia Street had just been cleaned as a DPW truck pulled out toward 15th Street. Tin foil remnants still clung to parts of the sidewalk, but the 176-yard stretch had been washed and sanitized. The two orange Gubbio Project trash cans remained in place, both empty but lined with black bags.
