San Francisco police recover stolen family heirloom from the 1800s

( KRON ) — A stolen family heirloom dating back to the 1870s was returned to a San Francisco resident on Feb. 25, following an investigation by the San Francisco Police Department’s burglary unit.

The missing heirloom was a jewel encrusted ring, which the owner suspected was stolen during a kitchen renovation project in 2024. The victim filed a report for the missing ring with the San Francisco Police Department in February of 2025, and the case was investigated by SFPD Sgt. Nicholas Hillard.

Police: Bodies found inside Suisun City home

On Feb. 18, the victim found a flyer stuck to the security gate of her apartment complex with a picture of her missing ring and a message asking for a reward for its return, SFPD Captain Mark Cota said during a press conference Wednesday.

“Friends, two months ago we found a ring near this house next to some construction debris,” the flyer read, according to Cota. “We were on vacation so we didn’t start looking for the owner right away. We showed the ring to an expert and we know it is very valuable. If anyone recognizes the ring, please send us a photo, video or any documentary proof. We are willing to return it for a reward.”

The victim contacted SFPD about the flyer and Hillard began communicating with the suspected poster of the flyer, posing as the victim’s cousin…
