SFUSD cancels hallmark field-trip program for first time ever

The San Francisco Unified School District is canceling its signature field trips to some of The City’s biggest parks next year due to its ongoing budget crunch, officials announced Friday.

SFUSD’s Environmental Science Center program — yearly fourth- and fifth-grade overnight field trips to Fort Funston, which the National Park Service administers within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, and third-grade daytime field trips to Golden Gate and John McLaren parks — has been a staple of the system’s science curriculum since 1976.

But the district is pausing the center’s programming for the 2025-26 school year to save roughly $600,000. Officials said they are optimistic they will be able to secure long-term funding and resume the field trips as soon as the 2026-27 school year, but did not make any guarantees…
