Five gray whales found dead in one week in San Francisco Bay after mysterious surge in sightings

SAN FRANCISCO — Scientists from the California Academy of Sciences and The Marine Mammal Center confirmed this week that five gray whales have died in the greater San Francisco Bay Area within just seven days, raising the total number of stranded whales in the region this year to 14.

According to data provided by both organizations, the latest incidents occurred between May 21 and May 26.
