Veronica Coto celebrated when her son turned 18 last month, but she also knew it meant that their already precarious living situation was likely to change.
Since moving into a Lower Nob Hill family shelter in September, the single mother from El Salvador has been struggling to find permanent housing for months. Now that her son is legally an adult, they no longer qualify for family shelter and need to be transitioned to adult shelter, but it’s unlikely they’ll be placed together.
While she said her case manager is working to find something, there’s no guarantee they’ll be able to stay together. Their status was still unclear as of Thursday, and if she’s unable to find something by June 6, she said she and her son don’t have anywhere else to go…
