Our so-called experts for San Francisco public schools actually wanted our high school teens to learn that China’s Red Guards are a social justice movement worthy of inspiration. Never mind that in those days high school students attacked their teachers as “stinking intellectuals” and worse. How did we get here and who needs to do things differently?
Maybe it is time for a revolution from our students and families- one of community input to overthrow bureaucratic slop.
Ethnic studies are indeed an admirable goal with roots that started here generations ago. We do need our students to learn not just political history, but history of the folks of all races and ethnicities that brought us the good and bad of today. Yet when some unnamed bureaucrats deem the Red Guards to be admirable, there’s a tad of a disconnect. And this school district has a significant number of families who have lived through that horrible part of Chinese history…
