Former guard admits to planting contraband in California prisons so he could find it

A former state prison guard has pleaded guilty to planting drugs and other contraband that he would then discover to increase his pay and ranking.

Avelino Ramirez, who worked at San Quentin and the California Medical Facility in Vacaville for more than a decade, pleaded guilty to wire fraud on Thursday in federal court in San Francisco. He is free on bail and is scheduled to be sentenced in September.
