Ava Community Energy has kicked off a $10 million e-bike rebate initiative designed to support more than 9,000 electric bike purchases through September 2026. The Oakland-based public electricity supplier is working in partnership with the Alameda County Transportation Commission, which is contributing $4 million to the effort.
The program’s tiered structure focuses on equity as well as accelerating adoption. Rebates start at $400 for standard e-bikes and go up to $900 for cargo bikes, which are often used to replace family cars or delivery vans. Lower-income residents enrolled in California energy assistance programs can access higher rebates — $1,000 for standard bikes and $1,500 for cargo models — ensuring broader access to clean transportation.
Ava has also allocated $250 rebates for safety gear, highlighting the importance of responsible riding. Rebates are distributed via monthly lotteries rather than first-come-first-served, with about 600 awards each month. This system helps avoid early sellouts and gives residents ongoing opportunities to participate, while helping local shops manage inventory consistently.
Strengthening Local Retail and Community Engagement
A key feature of Ava’s approach is the requirement that rebates be redeemed at participating local bike shops. This strategy channels funds directly into community businesses rather than large online retailers, creating local economic ripple effects. Currently, 19 shops across Alameda County and cities like Stockton and Tracy are participating, including specialized e-bike dealers and major sporting goods stores…
