Heroic San Francisco Firefighter Who Contracted HIV While Treating an Injured Patient Denied Pension

A San Francisco firefighter who contracted HIV on the job while heroically treating an injured patient is being denied his hard-earned pension — and the chance to return to work — in what sources describe as a grave injustice.

Stephen Kloster, 50, says he was working on Sept. 15, 2003, when open scratches on his arms were splashed with infected blood from a woman who had fallen in her kitchen.

“I didn’t think anything about it at the time,” he told the San Francisco Examiner
