Safeway workers at 250 California stores could go on strike Saturday

Thousands of Safeway employees across the Bay Area could go on strike Saturday if a new labor agreement isn’t reached between their union representatives and the company by midnight Friday.

Over 250 stores from Grapevine to the Oregon border could potentially see workers walk off their jobs and join picket lines outdoors Saturday, according to Jim Araby, a spokesperson for UFCW 5. As of 9:20 p.m., negotiations between union and Safeway representatives were still underway, Araby said.

“This is about fairness and respect for the essential workers who keep our communities fed and our stores running,” said John Frahm, president of UFCW 5. “We hope management comes to the table ready to meet the needs of their frontline workers.”…
