People wait hours for these mochi doughnuts. Now they’re coming to S.F.

After seven years serving mochi doughnuts in the South Bay, Modo Hawaii will open a second location in San Francisco’s Sunset District.

Before opening a Santa Clara storefront in 2020, Modo operated as a popup for two years in San Jose. Even in its early days, some customers waited as long as five hours to get a taste of its chewy mochi doughnuts. The store previously had locations in Southern California and Honolulu, but closed them in 2022.

Mochi doughnuts — made with Japanese sweet rice flour — originated in Hawaii as a fusion of American and Japanese culture. Modo, which will open at 1353 Taraval St., offers a variety of doughnut flavors, along with a menu of poke bowls, soy lattes, coffee and ice cream…
