San Mateo husband and wife charged for human trafficking of nanny

(KRON) — A San Mateo husband and wife are expected in court Wednesday to face charges of human trafficking. In August 2024, the couple’s nanny reported to Stanford hospital staff that she was being abused, leading to a police investigation that uncovered the alleged crimes, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office.

Qi Li, 35, and his wife Jie Xu, 37, are accused of two felony counts of conspiracy to commit a crime, human trafficking, assault with a deadly weapon, criminal threats and grand theft of wages.

The victim, a 53-year-old woman, used an employment agency in China to help find work as a nanny in the United States. After the nanny met with Li and Xu by video, she agreed to take care of the couple’s 9-month-old baby for six months and obtain a work visa, according to prosecutors…
