Considered an institution in the Filipino community, Seafood City opened its first branch in Daly City on Thursday. The Filipino grocery chain, which began in 1989 in National City, California, now has 38 locations across North America.
The opening is significant for Daly City, often called the Filipino capital of the United States, where nearly one in three residents identify as Filipino, according to 2019 census data.
“Some might ask, ‘Why open in Daly City when there’s already a Seafood City in South San Francisco nearby?’” said Matthew Go, president of Seafood City. “Our answer is simple: because Daly City holds deep meaning for Filipino families.
