Beware of scammers at self-checkout lines, San Mateo police warn

Scammers are sweet-talking and stealing from San Mateo seniors as they use self-checkout terminals at major retailers, police say.

Thieves have stolen from at least two seniors in recent weeks, walking away in some cases with over $1,000 in goods, said San Mateo Police Department spokesperson Andrew Peeks.

Officers arrested Stela Muresan and her 13-year-old daughter in connection to one theft, San Mateo District Attorney Stephen Wagstaffe said. Muresan will appear in court on Aug. 21…
