S.F.’s Sunset Dunes redesign aims to ease tensions between families and cyclists

Sunset Dunes Park, the city’s new oceanfront expanse built on the former Great Highway, is getting a makeover aimed at calming tensions between families and faster-moving visitors.

The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department announced Friday that the next phase of improvements will reorganize the 50-acre park into two clearly defined zones: a park zone on the west side of the median and a multi-use zone on the east.

The park zone will be dedicated to quieter, family-friendly activities such as walking, yoga, picnics and community gatherings. Children will be permitted to ride non-motorized bikes or scooters.

The multi-use zone will serve as a shared corridor for cyclists, runners, walkers, scooters and e-bikes. Signs and pavement markings will direct users to stay to the right and remind visitors that pedestrians have the right of way at crosswalks…
