The Bus That Launched a Thousand Wipes
*If you thought riding public transit was a gamble, San Francisco’s 14 Mission line just raised the stakes. This Muni bus has become infamous for its surprise “organic décor,” racking up more poop-related complaints than any other route. Between January 2024 and August 2025, SFMTA logged 805 feces complaints across its system. A solid 186 of those — 23% — came from the 14 alone. Congratulations, it’s officially the city’s #1 poo-senger experience.
Close contenders like the 38 and 38R only managed 68 complaints each. Which means if cleanliness is your kink, the 14 Mission is not the ride for you. Unless, of course, you bring Clorox wipes and nerves of steel.
Passengers Say: Check Your Seat Before You Wreck Your Pants
Veteran rider Teviate Naha claims he’s spotted messes on the 14 at least 10 times in nine months. A 19-year-old photographer said he’s seen six incidents this year alone. Home care worker Ryan Lopez kept it simple: “You gotta look before you sit down.” Words to live by, especially on this route, The San Francisco Standard is reporting.
Even some drivers acknowledge the issue, though one unnamed operator insisted he hasn’t personally had to deal with it recently. Translation: the odds may not always be in your favor.
Budget Cuts Could Make a Stinky Situation Stinkier
Here’s where things get messy. SFMTA is staring down a $322 million budget deficit, forcing 5–7% cuts across divisions. Daily cleanings and rapid-response poop patrols are expensive. And if janitorial crews shrink, that 35-minute cleanup promise could stretch into “hope you brought extra shoes” territory.
Mayor Daniel Lurie floated the idea of a property tax to fund Muni, but it’s unclear if voters will shell out more cash to keep buses less crappy — literally. If not, the 14 Mission might level up from “Poop Bus” to “Rolling Porta-Potty.”
The Official Spin: We’re Trying, Really
SFMTA insists that complaints make up just 2% of all 311 calls. Spokesperson Parisa Safarzadeh emphasized daily cleanings and mobile crews on standby. But with riders posting photos and venting online, that official reassurance feels about as comforting as sitting on a suspiciously warm seat.
The route itself is part of the problem. The 14 Mission cuts through areas with high homelessness, particularly around Mission and 18th streets. It’s an intersection of housing crises, sanitation gaps, and transit strain. In short: the perfect storm for, well, storms of a very specific kind.
Locals React: From Outrage to Reddit Jokes
The San Francisco Standard’s September 4 report went viral locally, pulling 3,000 likes on X in hours. Posts from @MuniRiders moaned, “This is why I avoid the 14,” while @SFHomeless warned against blaming unhoused people alone. Meanwhile, Reddit’s r/sanfrancisco lit up with gallows humor and DIY solutions, from free Pit Stops to “BYO disinfectant.”…
