Former CEO of Yurok Tribe telecom subsidiary pleads guilty to embezzling over $500k

SAN FRANCISCO — The former CEO of a tribal telecom subsidiary has pleaded guilty to embezzling more than $500,000 from the Yurok Tribe and now faces a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.

In a press release, the U.S Attorney’s Office Northern District of California (NDCA) said Jessica Engle, 42, of Gold Hill, Ore., pleaded guilty in federal court on Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 3.

A federal grand jury indicted Engle on September 24, 2024, on charges of embezzling approximately $579,574 from the Indian Tribal organization and theft from programs receiving federal funds. Engle pleaded guilty to both counts in the indictment…
