BART to pay $6.75M to woman shot by officer, admits initial report was inaccurate

BART announced Friday that it has settled a lawsuit with a woman who was shot and wounded by a BART police officer in the Union City Station parking lot last year — and acknowledged that it inaccurately reported what happened.

The agency agreed to pay $6.75 million to Jasmine Gao, officials said. Gao, 33, was shot by a BART officer on the night of Nov. 18 after driving away from a tense encounter with them, officials said. Officials originally said an officer fired his gun because Gao dragged them with her vehicle when she drove away, but body-worn camera footage showed that did not happen.
