Oakland to pay $7 million to cyclist injured by pothole

Oakland will pay $7 million to Ty Whitehead, who was severely injured in 2017 when his bike hit a pothole during a practice session for a fundraising charity ride.

“I’m tired a lot,” Whitehead, 58, said Friday from his home in San Francisco after the settlement was announced. But “I think it will allow me to live my life the way I was accustomed to when I worked.” And he said it should also send Oakland a message “to maintain roads properly for bicycles.”
