East Bay man gets 21 years in prison for selling fentanyl-laced pills, which killed 17-year-old

(KRON) — A Bay Area man responsible for selling a counterfeit OxyContin pill laced with fentanyl, which killed a 17-year-old in October of 2022, was sentenced to 21 years in state prison on Sept. 16.

The convicted drug dealer, 29-year-old Malcolm Shephard of Pittsburg, pled guilty to charges of involuntary manslaughter and selling a controlled substance to a minor causing great bodily injury or death. The conviction was the first of its kind in Contra Costa County, according to the Pittsburg Police Department.

“During the investigation, detectives recovered over 2,000 fentanyl pills, cocaine, a firearm, and additional evidence of drug sales,” Pittsburg PD said. “This case was presented to the Contra Costa County District Attorney, and for the first time in county history, a fentanyl dealer was indicted for criminal homicide.”
