Bay Area family mourns 94-year-old tricyclist, killed by driver who ran onto road shoulder

A 94-year-old Bay Area man who rode a tricycle to feel youthful was fatally struck by a driver while he was out on one of his daily rides in Sonoma County, his family said.

Fernando Velazquez was hit on the afternoon of Sept. 20 while he was stopped on the right shoulder of the Old Redwood Highway south of Shiloh Road, near the border of Windsor and Santa Rosa, according to the Santa Rosa California Highway Patrol and the county coroner. The driver of a Range Rover had drifted into the shoulder and fatally struck Velazquez.

First responders arrived and took Velazquez to the Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital, where he died. The driver remained at the crash site and cooperated with officers, who determined drugs and alcohol were not involved in the collision.
