73-year-old burger chain opens first SF outpost at Fisherman’s Wharf

Where Fisherman’s Wharf once had a wax museum, now there are burgers. On Tuesday, Nation’s Giant Hamburgers opened in the space formerly occupied by Madame Tussauds, as first reported by KRON-TV. Madame Tussauds closed in August 2024 after 10 years at the wharf; before this, another wax museum had been housed in the same space since 1963.

Nation’s is celebrating its grand opening with a ribbon cutting Tuesday, and Mayor Daniel Lurie is expected to give a speech at 2 p.m., a Nation’s press representative told SFGATE.

“Opening a Nation’s in Fisherman’s Wharf has been a dream decades in the making,” Nation’s CEO Adam Smith told SFGATE in an emailed statement. “Being here in the heart of San Francisco marks a new exciting growth chapter for us. I would like to thank the Mayor and his ‘recovery push’ for making this dream come true.”

In an effort to draw more tourists to the wharf, which saw numerous business closures during the pandemic, the city is demolishing historic seafood restaurant Alioto’s to make way for a new public plaza.
