Video: Jetboard surfer rides wake of massive cargo ship in San Francisco Bay

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — A person riding a jetboard was seen surfing the wake of a cargo ship entering San Francisco Bay on Nov. 15.

The video was taken near Crissy Field Beach around 3 p.m. The person recording the video told KRON4 News that the surfer followed the cargo ship as it traveled the stretch of water between Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz Island.

The U.S. Coast Guard’s Southwest District told KRON4 News that failing to obey water navigation rules is dangerous and potentially illegal.

“While the act of surfing is not illegal, the Coast Guard would like to highlight the dangers to the individual and maritime community and the possible legal ramifications of these acts,” the USCG said. “Additionally, the Coast Guard would like to encourage the maritime community to research, understand and adhere to all navigation rules including vessel hierarchy and right-of-way.”
